How it works
Two calendars
Every date has a place in the sun’s year, with 24 solar terms, and in the moon’s year.
Sixty pairs
A stem and a branch name each day. The branch brings an animal, and the animal it clashes with.
Twelve spirits
Spirits, Day Officers and mansions take turns. Six spirits make a Yellow Path day, six a Black Path day.
Good to know
What is the Chinese almanac?
The almanac, called huangli or tongshu, is a day-by-day guide published every year. It gives each date its lunar day, its stem and branch, and what the day suits or should avoid. Families check it before a wedding, a move or an opening.
Is it the same across schools?
Lunar dates and solar terms are astronomy, so they agree everywhere. The good-for and avoid lists come from older rule books, and publishers differ on some entries. A paper almanac or a temple master may not match this page line by line.
Does it apply outside China?
Yes. The dates are Chinese local calendar days, and most families overseas simply use the same calendar date where they live. A lucky October 31 is October 31 in Los Angeles too.
The almanac is a tradition, and schools differ. Enjoy it as custom. It is not a basis for medical, legal or money decisions.
