Zhuni small pots

Zhuni teapots are small for a reason: this red Yixing clay shrinks hard in the kiln.

Three things zhuni does differently

1

It shrinks in the fire

Zhuni is very fine with little sand, so it shrinks far more than other zisha. Big pots warp or crack, so most stay small.

2

It likes short steeps

The walls are thin and dense. Drinkers pour fast with fragrant oolong and say the cup turns out bright, with a clear high aroma.

3

It needs warming first

Thin zhuni can crack from sudden heat. Warm it with hot water first, and never set it over a flame.

Small pot, short steep, bright cup.

What to look for

选Ask about the clay. Cheap 'zhuni' is often other clay with red added.
选Look closely. Fine zhuni often shows a soft pear-skin texture, though that alone proves nothing.
选Check the lid and spout. Warping is common with this clay.
选Buy for how you drink: one or two people, a few small cups.

Good to know

What is zhuni clay?

Zhuni is a fine red clay from Yixing, traditionally linked to the Zhaozhuang area. It is rich in iron, fires dense, and the true material is scarce.

Why are zhuni teapots so small?

Because the clay shrinks a lot when fired, and large forms warp or crack. The small size also suits gongfu brewing for one or two people.

Is Chaozhou red clay the same as Yixing zhuni?

No. Chaozhou pots use local Guangdong red clay and are thrown on a wheel. Yixing pots are built by paddling. Both are respected traditions.
