Build the Tang look from skirt to shawl

1

Tie the skirt high

The waistband sits on the chest, not the waist. Tie it wide, flat and firm, or it slides down within a few steps.

2

Add a banbi

The banbi is a short half-sleeve jacket worn over a narrow-sleeved top. The court women in the Yongtai murals wear it this way.

3

Drape the pibo

The pibo is a long sheer scarf laid across the back and over both arms. Let it trail, and watch for door handles.

Tang women also wore men's robes, boots and all.

What to look for

选Striped jianse skirts, sewn from alternating color panels, are a real Tang detail.
选A wide, firm waistband with long ties that grip the chest.
选Light fabric. A long heavy skirt drags the ties down all day.
选Ask if it follows a mural or figurine. Many Tang listings are loosely modern.

Good to know

What is the difference between Tang style hanfu and a Tang suit?

They are unrelated. Tang-style hanfu follows Tang dynasty dress from the 600s to 900s. A Tang suit is a band-collar jacket with frog buttons that grew from Qing dynasty jackets.

Is hanfu the same as kimono?

No. Kimono developed in Japan. Nara-era court dress borrowed from Tang China, which explains the similar wrapped collar, and the two then went separate ways in cut, belts and rules.

How do you keep a chest-high hanfu skirt up?

Tie it tight with a wide, flat band over a fitted under layer. Nothing else holds it up, so a light skirt stays put far better than a heavy one.
