How the fifteen days go

1

New Year's Eve

Everyone comes home for reunion dinner. Fish goes on the table and some is left over, since yu, fish, sounds like surplus.

2

Day one

Wear something new and red, wish elders well and give red envelopes. Many families skip sweeping today, so the luck stays in.

3

Day five to day fifteen

Day five welcomes the god of wealth. Day fifteen, the Lantern Festival, closes the season.

Rich or poor, you go home for New Year.

What to get ready

选Check the animal and year on anything printed, since the zodiac changes yearly
选Get red envelopes early, plus crisp new bills from your bank
选Hang couplets and fu signs on the last day or two
选For gifts, skip clocks, pears and sets of four, which all carry unlucky sounds
