Three things to do under the moon

1

Set a table outside

Put out round fruit, mooncakes and tea where you can see the moon. Pomelo is a classic, since its name, you, sounds like the word for protection.

2

Cut and share

A mooncake is rich and dense. Cut it into small wedges so each person gets a piece of the same circle.

3

Tell the stories

Chang'e floated to the moon after taking the elixir. Wu Gang chops the osmanthus tree, and the rabbit pounds medicine.

Though a thousand miles apart, we share this moon.

Choosing mooncakes

选Cantonese style has thin glossy skin, lotus paste and often salted egg yolk
选Suzhou style is flaky, and Yunnan style is filled with ham
选Snow skin is soft and unbaked, so keep it cold
选Read the label for lard, egg, nuts and shelf life

Mooncakes with egg yolk or meat may be stopped at US customs. Declare any you carry in, or buy from a US bakery.
