What changed, and why it helps

1

Darts and a zip

Older qipao were cut flat, with no shoulder seam. Mid-century tailors added darts and zips for a closer shape and easier dressing.

2

An easier waist

Everyday cuts keep the collar and frogs but ease the waist, often falling to an A-line.

3

A lower slit

Near the knee it gives walking room. Mid-thigh looks like evening wear, so save that one for dinner.

The collar stays. Everything else can relax.

How to get the fit

选Start with the hip. Woven cloth with no stretch pulls there first.
选Leave two fingers of room at bust, waist and hip.
选Choose a lower collar for summer or a shorter neck.
选Sit down in it. The slit should stay put, not ride up your thigh.

Good to know

Can I wear a qipao if I'm not Chinese?

Yes. Many Chinese people are glad to see it worn well. It matters how: wear a real dress for a real occasion, not a costume or a joke.

What is the difference between a qipao and a cheongsam?

They are the same dress with two names. Qipao is the Mandarin word. Cheongsam comes from Cantonese for long gown, and it is the usual word in Hong Kong English.

Can you wear a qipao every day?

Yes, if the cut lets you. It was daily wear in Republican-era cities. Choose knee length, cotton or knit, and an easy waist.
