Dress for your practice

1

Tai chi at dawn

Soft cotton or linen that hangs loose. White and pale colors are common in the park, but nothing is required.

2

Kung fu class

Sturdy cotton that survives kicks, sweat and hard washing. Many schools choose black and set their own uniform.

3

Performance silk

Silk or silk-like satin shows every turn of a form on stage. It is too delicate for daily sweat.

In the park at dawn, nobody checks your uniform.

How to test one

选Sink into a low stance and raise both arms. Nothing should pull.
选Choose cuffs that roll back or stay clear of your hands.
选Elastic or tied ankles keep the hem out of your footwork.
选Pick natural fiber for daily use. It breathes and takes a hard wash.

Good to know

Do you need a uniform for tai chi?

No. Loose clothes and flat shoes are enough for most classes. Some schools ask for a uniform at events and demonstrations.

Do kung fu uniforms have belts?

Traditionally, no. Chinese martial arts had no colored belt ranks. Some modern schools, especially abroad, use colored sashes to mark progress.

What shoes are best for tai chi?

Flat, thin-soled shoes that let your foot pivot and feel the ground. Traditional cloth shoes work. Thick running shoes grip too much.
