Far From Home
lǚ · Fire over MountainTravel light, stay courteous, and remember you are a guest.
Away from home, you can manage small things well. Travelers get by through modest, careful conduct. Stay upright and humble, respect local ways, and the road stays open.
The six lines
The traveler fusses over petty things, and that smallness itself invites the trouble that follows.
The traveler reaches an inn, with means in hand and a loyal young servant. This is a sound, secure position.
The inn burns and the loyal servant is lost. Holding rigidly to your ways here is dangerous; a guest has no room for arrogance.
You find a place to stay and gain means and an axe for protection, yet your heart is not at ease. It is not home.
One arrow lost to bring down a pheasant: a small price. In time, it can earn you honor and standing.
The bird's nest burns. The traveler laughs first and wails later, having let the ox slip away while at ease. This is a serious caution.
The I Ching is a tool for reflection. Do not use it as the basis for medical, legal or money decisions.
