Hexagram 36
明夷

Hidden Light

míng yí · Earth over Fire

Keep your values alive quietly until the climate changes.

The judgment

The sun has sunk beneath the earth, and brightness is not welcome right now. Stay faithful to what you know through the hard stretch. Keep your light inward, where it is safe.

The six lines

Line 1 · Yang

A wounded bird flies with drooping wings. You may need to go quickly, hungry for days, while your hosts grumble. Leave anyway.

Line 2 · Yin

The dark has injured your left thigh. It hurts but does not stop you. A strong horse carries you out, so accept capable help and move.

Line 3 · Yang

Hunting southward in the dark, you capture the chief of the trouble. Even so, do not rush to set everything right at once.

Line 4 · Yin

You slip into the left side of the belly and learn the dark's true heart. Now that you understand, walk out the gate.

Line 5 · Yin

Like Prince Jizi, who feigned madness under a cruel king, you hide your light to keep it alive. Stay true on the inside.

Line 6 · Yin

No light now, only gloom. What first climbed to the heavens finally drops into the earth. Darkness that overreaches brings itself down.

The I Ching is a tool for reflection. Do not use it as the basis for medical, legal or money decisions.
