Walking with Care
lǚ · Heaven over LakeNear power or danger, let courtesy and care lead you.
You have set your foot on the tiger's tail, and it has not bitten. A dangerous situation can be crossed with care and good manners. Step lightly, and the way stays open.
The six lines
Go forward in plain shoes. Walk simply, as you are, without ambition, and there is no fault in it.
The road is level and wide. A quiet person who keeps to it and stays true does well.
Half blind you think you see, half lame you think you stride. The tiger you tread on bites. Overconfidence is dangerous, a soldier playing king.
You touch the tiger's tail again, this time with trembling care. That fearful attention can carry you through.
You stride with hard decisiveness. Even when you are right, being this firm carries danger. Stay aware of it.
Look back over the path you have walked and read the signs in it. Turning around with what you learn is deeply good.
